The show

From 30 September to 29 October 2023 the Danilo Maestosi exhibition opens to the public. Penelope's canvases. Free-form score in 5 movements , edited by Erminia Pellecchia, in the spaces of the Hendrik Christian Andersen Museum in Rome .

The title of the exhibition recalls the five-movement sequenceLa Notte Armata , Io Diritti , Com'èdeep il mare , La Notte , Penelope – of the narrative wanted by the Roman painter, far from the seduction of figuration but built in a sequence that is nevertheless recognizable and marked.

The updating of the archaism of the myth, to the point of making it powerfully contemporary, is achieved through some symbolic themes: time , represented by the web of the spinner Penelope who weaves destiny; women , those of the past who, like those of today, can be victims of violence, elected as the icon of all people who suffer oppression; war , understood as a geopolitical conflict but also as an unhealable wound of humanity.

The exhibition, writes the curator Erminia Pellecchia , "is a journey between the Homeric age and our torn present, through the figure of Penelope, borrowed from Danilo Maestosi to tell, together with the story of Ulysses' wife, his, our history. A journey through time, like all the Roman artist's exhibitions, and the closing of a cycle that began three years ago and which now takes him towards other scenes, seeking contact with the works of the Andersen Museum and the "ideal city" dreamed of by Norwegian painter".

On display are 35 works (mixed media on wood, mostly in the minimalist square format) and Penelope is painting, the instrument through which the Roman artist, wanting to reflect on the meaning of art, tries to demolish our prisons and imagines a possible future by undoing and searching for forms, just like the Greek heroine does who, in the creative rite of weaving and unstitching her infinite web, tries to take control of her own destiny.
