The Memmo Foundation of Rome presents Amalia Pica. Almost , Amalia Pica 's first solo exhibition in Italy, scheduled from Tuesday 12 April to Sunday 16 October 2022 . The exhibition, curated by Francesco Stocchi, represents a new chapter in the Argentine artist's research, focused on the analysis of the strategies implemented in communication and, more generally, on the role of language.
For years, Amalia Pica has questioned the dynamics by which the other participates in a feeling or an idea, through the use of drawings, installations, sculptures, performances. The public is often involved in his works which invite both intellectual and physical forms of participation. In the realization of his works, the artist adopts everyday objects such as furniture, shoes, bottles and various tools, used in a paradoxical overturning of semiotics and its rules.
On the occasion of the exhibition at the Memmo Foundation in Rome , Amalia Pica presents a body of unpublished sculptures, an ideal continuation of the Catachresis series , centered on the rhetorical figure of catachresis. The extension of a word beyond the limits of its meaning reveals how language and images can interact with each other, contributing to the definition of reality. The “leg of the table”, the “arm of the chair”, the “neck of the bottle”: these are some examples of catacres that Amalia Pica uses for the realization of the works. The result is hybrid figures, a mixture of objects and anthropomorphic or animal forms, of “almost” characters. And it is precisely this adverb - which expresses a condition not fully achieved - that gives the exhibition its title. It almost alludes to the intermediate stage of the sculptures created by the artist, the result of paradoxical and incongruent grafts, through which Pica nevertheless manages to suggest figures and anatomies endowed with an unexpected grace.
