The show

The exhibition aims to be the occasion for a broad reflection on the sculpture, which will be able to make use of the combination of Medardo's works with some of the greatest classic masterpieces kept in the Museum of Palazzo Altemps, in a path of reading the repertoire and the modernity of the artist made therefore even more stimulating and unpublished.

The exhibition, in the rooms on the first floor, does not envisage a chronological but thematic itinerary, through some of the artist's treated subjects of which different versions will be presented, in a choice determined by reasons not only iconographic, but above all compositional and technical: the Rosso's extraordinary originality in experimenting with absolutely new uses of materials and the consequent variety of material rendering will be returned through the selection of works in wax, plaster and bronze, the materials congenial to him in the rendering of what he himself called "fugitive space of the fraction one second ”.

The photographs of Rosso will also be exhibited. In fact, starting from the end of the nineteenth century, photography assumes for Rosso the sense of an autonomous and complete research, an integral and irreplaceable part of an incessant work of recovery of a few, essential images, which has, not surprisingly, an equivalent in that continuous reworking of the sculptures he conceived within the first years of the twentieth century that characterizes the last decades of his career. For Rosso, photography was the occasion for a study on matter and light, now unrelated to the comparison with truth. The exhibition itinerary also intends to offer an opportunity for dialogue with antiquity, inserting within these extraordinary environments some testimonies of the relationship between Rosso and the ancient, not yet properly investigated in the exhibition area.

The exhibition is organized in collaboration with the Modern Art Gallery of Milan, the support of the Medardo Rosso Museum and the organization and promotion of Electa.
