The show

100 shots, one world. From Berlin to China, passing through Moscow, New York, Bangkok and Naples.

Finally the exhibition that returns a giant of photographic reportage. He could meet at two in the morning in a night club in East Berlin, in the middle of the Cold War, while sipping Soviet champagne, or in a sunny Madrid street eating shrimp and studying the faces and gestures of passersby. Taciturn and silent as a sly cat ready to "shoot" - this is how the writer and photographer, Ermanno Rea called him -, to those who asked him why he used such elementary equipment (a Leica camera and a few more lenses), Caio Mario Garrubba replied that photographs "are made with the head and not with the machines". To a skin dislike for the powerful, which he tried to film in the most "stinking" moments, as he himself recounts, he matched an unconditional passion for the people he met on the street, who became in his images the extraordinary subjects of one of the deepest photographic gazes of the second half of the twentieth century. For the first time, a major exhibition reveals in its entirety the talent of one of the most important authors of Italian and European photojournalism, thanks to the acquisition by the Historical Archive of the Istituto Luce of the entire archive of the photographer who has died today (60,000 negatives and 40,000 slides, as well as a large number of vintage prints, notes and contact sheets).
Distant. Gaius Mario Garrubba. Photographs is the title of the exhibition hosted by the National Gallery of Modern and Contemporary Art in Rome, organized and promoted by Istituto Luce-Cinecittà . 100 shots, mostly unpublished, to (re) discover the gaze, the travels and the human itineraries of an author still too little known in Italy, internationally esteemed as an authentic master.
