The video work "The March of Man" by Yervant Gianikian and Angela Ricci Lucchi becomes part of the Centro Pecci collection thanks to winning the ministerial call PAC 2024 - Plan for Contemporary Art, promoted by the General Directorate of Contemporary Creativity of the Ministry of Culture.

"The March of Man" was first presented at the 49th International Art Exhibition - La Biennale di Venezia, curated by Harald Szeemann in 2001, and was the subject of a comprehensive installation at Hangar Bicocca during the monographic exhibition of the two artists in 2004.

The video installation, spatially arranged on three large screens, focuses on cultural repressions and the great omissions of history, such as Italian colonialism in Africa. Inspired by footage shot in Africa between the late 19th century and the 1960s, this work tells of a European perspective on the African continent imbued with prejudice and contempt, if not explicit violence.

The presentation of the video work within the spaces of Centro Pecci will give rise to a suggestive experience of space redesigned by images: walking along the sequence of the three screens, one traverses the history of man through an immersive journey in three stages, from the late 19th century with the first screen, to the 1920s with the second, and finally the 1960s with the third.

A video review will be organized concurrently with the exhibition at the center's cinema and will allow for a deeper exploration of the themes addressed by Gianikian and Ricci Lucchi in their works: colonial violence, major wars, exile, people's migrations, themes that resonate strongly in today's socio-political context.

Yervant Gianikian and Angela Ricci Lucchi, through their capacity for testimony and reinterpretation, address the major themes of the 20th and 21st century history, narrating them with a strictly contemporary perspective, according to the view of those who have been excluded from the dominant narrative.
