Villa Schöningen is a museum in Potsdam. It is based in the villa of the same name, a historic 19th century mansion built in Italian style. The museum is an exhibition venue for important contemporary art exhibitions, but retains a permanent collection dedicated to the history of the famous "Bridge of Spies". The villa is in fact located at the Glienicke bridge, one of the most famous border points between East and West Berlin. It is possible to visit a permanent multimedia exhibition on the history of the house and the Glienicker bridge. The focus of the exhibition is the period between 1961 and 1989, when on the Glienicke bridge the prisoner spies of the East and the West were exchanged between their respective blocks.
The museum's exhibition site was inaugurated in 2009, on the occasion of the twentieth anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall. Temporary art exhibitions of international importance are organized. The historic garden of the Villa was designed by Peter Joseph Lenné and is part of the World Heritage Site. In summer, sculpture exhibitions are held in the garden of the Villa.
