The Museu de Arte Contemporânea da Fundação de Serralves, located on Rua Dom João de Castro in Porto, is the main Portuguese museum of contemporary art. Designed by Pritzker laureate Álvaro Siza Vieira and inaugurated in 1999, the building harmoniously integrates within the 18 hectares of the Serralves park, blending modern architecture with the natural landscape.
The permanent collection covers the period from 1968 to the present day, with approximately 4,300 works by Portuguese and international artists such as Andy Warhol, Gerhard Richter, Claes Oldenburg, Anselm Kiefer, Paula Rego, Nam June Paik, in addition to the Miró collection deposited by the Portuguese State. The exhibitions are usually on semi-permanent rotation through five annual cycles.
The museum occupies approximately 4,500 m² of exhibition space spread across 14 rooms, while the remaining 8,200 m² house facilities such as an auditorium, library, bookshop, cafeteria, and a restaurant with a panoramic terrace overlooking the park. Since June 2024, the new Ala Álvaro Siza is active, expanding the exhibition area and enriching the collection archives.
