The "Ménagerie, le zoo du Jardin des Plantes" is a zoological garden located within the Jardin des Plantes, in the 5th arrondissement of Paris. It is part of the National Museum of Natural History in Paris and is one of the oldest zoos still open to the public in the world. It presents to the public about a thousand large animals, including mammals of 50 different species, birds of 80 different species, reptiles of 50 different species, amphibians of 10 different species and invertebrates of about fifty different species. Small and medium-sized species are privileged, including several endangered. Most of the animals were born in captivity and come from purchases and loans from other zoos. La Ménagerie participates in various breeding programs for threatened species, with the aim of reintroducing them into nature, if their environment is stabilized or restored. The buildings that house the Menagerie were built during the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. Some of these are characterized by an Art Deco style.
