La Chapelle expiatoire is a historical monument of Paris located in Place Louis XVI, the site where the old Madeleine cemetery was located, in the 8th arrondissement of the city. The chapel is a small jewel of neoclassical architecture. It was built in 1826 by the architect Pierre-François-Léonard Fontane, Napoleon's main architect, at the behest of Louis XVIII, who dedicated it to the memory of Louis XVI and Marie Antoinette, who died during the French Revolution. In fact, the chapel stands on the ground where the two sovereigns were buried. The chapel is preceded by a portico with a pediment supported by four Doric columns. The chapel has a dome. There are also sculptural groups depicting the King and Marie Antoinette.
