From 14 September to 18 November 2024
The Nivola Museum is pleased to present the exhibition of the artist and photographer Nicola Lo Calzo (1979), Brigantinas, the winning project of the Photography Strategy 2023 competition promoted by the General Directorate of Contemporary Creativity of the Ministry of Culture.
With over thirty unpublished works created in the territory, the project curated by Elisa Medde and Giangavino Pazzola investigates the theme of subalternity at the intersection of gender, class, and colonial positioning of the struggles for land in Sardinia, questioning the ways in which certain events and dynamics have influenced the formation of subjectivities and contemporary Sardinian identity.
Starting from the study of episodes concerning local resistance to colonial and territorial subjugation phenomena, and of the female figures that these events have animated, Brigantinas highlights the persistence of tensions created by power relations imposed on internal communities that maintain a close connection with territorial and landscape issues of today.
Through unpublished images and archival materials from various sources (including the State Archive of Nuoro and the Banditism Museum of Aggius), the exhibition offers a platform for discussing new visual paradigms for understanding subalternity in the contemporary world. In addition, there is a video featuring the interpretation - by the actress and author Vittoria Marras - of Paska Zau, the protagonist of the popular revolt of "Su Connottu" against the laws that abolished the communal use of lands (1868).
Several authors, including Bachisio Bandinu, argue that "language is the testimony of a transformative path of life and culture of a people, within the social experience of the historical-political, economic, and cultural condition".
In this perspective, the Brigantinas project is situated.
