The Nivola Museum is pleased to present the Isidro Ferrer exhibition. The Book of Others, the first solo exhibition of the Spanish illustrator and graphic designer in an Italian institution.
Born in Madrid in 1963, Isidro Ferrer is a legendary figure in the field of contemporary graphics, creator of a style that stands out for the power of images, irony, the intelligent use of metaphor and typographic research. His work for important cultural institutions, brands and international publishing houses has received numerous awards, including the prestigious Premio Nacional de Diseño in 2002 and the Premio Nacional de Ilustracion in 2006.
Ferrer's images are born through an original and suggestive method: starting from the theme assigned to him, he creates real sculptures in his studio, often starting from found objects, scraps of wood or metal, and apparently insignificant elements, assembled so as to assume unexpected and surprising shapes. Ferrer constantly makes use of pareidolia, the instinctive tendency of our brain to recompose abstract or random compositions into familiar images endowed with meaning. Just as a cloud in the sky or a rock in a landscape take on human or animal forms before our eyes, in the same way in Isidro Ferrer's compositions three points arranged in a triangle are enough to evoke a face, brushwood, a beard, a bicycle seat , the cunning muzzle of a fox. The sculptures assembled in this way are then photographed against clean, neutral backgrounds and composed in elegant typographical games to obtain maximum communicative effectiveness.
At the crossroads of artisanal research, photographic practice and digital reworking, objects and posters interact with each other creating enigmatic images which, through a language that does not give up on simplicity, almost like a whisper that informs but does not impose, stimulate viewers to play, to illusion and reflection.
Although also active in the commercial field, Ferrer prefers cultural and social communication intended in particular for theatre, cinema and music, in a field of exploration and communication linked to human thought. A special place in his activity is reserved for book illustration: poetry, non-fiction and literature for adults and children are opportunities to collaborate with writers and poets from all over the world. In the pages of his books, Ferrer displays an extraordinary range of styles, colors and iconography, which make him one of the most interesting illustrators on the international scene.
