German Leather Museum

The Deutsches Ledermuseum in Offenbach am Main is one of the largest leather museums in the world. Founded in 1917 as a collection of historical models for the training of young artisans and leather goods, today the collection includes more than 30,000 objects from different cultures and eras, which testify to the global use and the different cultural and historical significance of leather as a material used in different eras and cultures. The objects in the collection are divided into three different sections: applied arts, ethnology and footwear. Today the museum includes objects of everyday use and luxury, from crafts and design to fashion and objects of everyday culture. The oldest work on display is an Egyptian container from the 4th millennium BC. The range extends with medieval bookcases, samurai armor and African shields, luxury items such as gilded leather wallpapers from aristocratic and upper-class families from the 17th and 18th centuries, or items made from vegan and leather-like substitute materials . The collection is completed by representative and court objects, everyday objects such as traditional clothes and costumes, tools and objects from religious and ceremonial contexts, as well as hunting and war objects. A large collection of bags illustrates the development of the bag from the end of the Middle Ages to the present day.
