The Germanisches Nationalmuseum is a Nuremberg museum dedicated to the history and culture of Germany. Founded in 1852, it is the largest museum of its kind in Germany, as well as the largest museum space in the world devoted to German culture and art . Its collection boasts about 1,200,000 objects and works of art (including 25,000 on display), from prehistoric times to the present day. The Germanisches Nationalmuseum was conceived as a huge compendium of the history, literature and art of Germany. The collection includes not only historical, but also artistic objects: works by German painters and sculptors, an archaeological collection, weapons and armor, musical and scientific instruments, toys, costumes, everyday objects and many more. Also inside is Germany's largest art and culture library with around 650,000 books . The museum sees itself as a research and educational institution that presents cultural history in an interdisciplinary way through exhibitions and publications. Furthermore, it emphasizes respect for all cultures and wants to make connections with them tangible for all people regardless of age, origin, education and religion.
