closed Pina Bausch. Ensembles

The show

The tribute that the Donnaregina Foundation for the contemporary arts and the Campania Foundation of the Festivals dedicate to the icon of contemporary dance Pina Bausch, ten years after his death, continues. A project in chapters that has already seen on stage at Madre the performance Moving with Pina, by and with Cristiana Morganti, and which ends with Ensembles, video installation on Pina Bausch and her Tanztheater, curated by the Pina Bausch Foundation. Presented by the Donnaregina Foundation as part of "Piazza Madre" and by the Campania Foundation of Festivals as part of the 2019/20 edition of "Quartieri di vita", the video installation will be accompanied by a mini-workshop program with and with Marigia Maggipinto , realized with the support of the Federal Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Berlin and the Goethe Institut of Naples.

Ensembles is a composition of video projections and music created by Ismaël Dia, director of the Pina Bausch Archives, and by Matthias Burkert, the artist's longtime workmate and choreographer. Exhibited for the first time on the occasion of the Pina Bausch und das Tanztheater exhibition at the Bundeskunsthalle in Bonn in 2016, the installation highlights the fundamental importance of direct filming in Bausch's work, an essential part of his creative process from the outset. Among the "directors" are Rolf Borzik, Herbert Rach, Detlef Erler, Jérôme Cassou, Grigori Chakhov.

Ensembles focuses mainly on the dancers who have joined Pina Bausch in her years at the Tanztheater Wuppertal, fundamental in the choreographic process of the "great mother" of European dance theater. In the installation, extracts from the rich collection of video materials preserved in the Pina Bausch Archives come to light, giving us an idea of the original language of this great innovator, punctuated by the wide repertoire of 46 works that Bausch created with his company . To his "dancers" (dancers-actors) Bausch asks to dance but also to participate in the creation of the work, taking up and recording feelings and emotions, characteristic of his style. A recipient of numerous awards as a choreographer and dancer, Bausch was also loved by the greatest film directors such as Federico Fellini, Pedro Almodòvar and Wim Wenders, who in 2011 dedicated the documentary Pina to her, in which some famous performances are shown in 3D. "Pina's work was in 3D long before it was in the film," said Barbara Kaufmann, and that is why the three-dimensional intensity of her poetry fits perfectly with the opening to all the contemporary languages that characterizes a museum like the Madre.

The choreographer and dancer Marigia Maggipinto comes from the Tanztheater Wuppertal which, between December 20, 2019 and January 5, 2020, will hold a cycle of thirty-minute workshops at the Madre, dedicated to all dance lovers with every level of preparation. or without previous experience, which will propose a mix of different techniques, traditions and physical practices. Participants will be able to confront themselves with a wide variety of dance-related practices to approach directly, and will have the opportunity to learn short extracts from Bausch's choreography, taken from shows such as Nelken or Kontakthof. As Maggipinto states, the mini-workshop program transforms the visit to the museum into a "three-dimensional experience", physical and emotional, during which the public not only looks and listens but lives the artist's choreography in person.
