The Staatliche Münzsammlung München is a Munich museum dedicated to numismatics. It is located in the Munich Residenz (for centuries the residence and seat of the government of the dukes, then of the electoral princes and finally of the kings of Bavaria). Its collection contains over 300,000 coins, banknotes, coin tokens, medals, banknotes and cut stones from antiquity to the present day. The earliest specimens date back to the 3rd millennium BC. The main focus of the Münzkabinett is in particular on ancient coins, German Renaissance medals and thalers from Bavarian history.
The collection has an ancient origin: founded by the Bavarian Duke Albrecht V, the Kunstkammer owned more than 7,000 coins by the end of the 16th century. His son, Duke William V, continued the collection.
The Staatliche Münzsammlung München also houses the largest public numismatic library in Germany. It contains over 26,000 volumes of numismatics, economic history and general history from antiquity to modern times. There are also 60 trade journals, 100 monetary mandates, 50 manuscripts and various booklets.
The museum also organizes several temporary exhibitions.
