Located in the heart of the historic center, just a few steps from Marienplatz, the Münchner Stadtmuseum is the civic museum of Munich, as well as one of the most comprehensive and fascinating in the city. Founded in 1888, the museum is housed in a former Augustinian monastery and tells, through a rich permanent collection, the history, culture, and identity of the Bavarian capital.
The exhibitions range from the urban history of Munich, with documents, maps, and historical photographs, to everyday life, fashion, and popular culture. One of the most visited sections is dedicated to mechanical music, with rare and fascinating instruments such as barrel organs and carillons. Another prominent area is the photographic collection, one of the most important in Germany, with over 2 million images.
The museum also hosts exhibitions on themes related to resistance to Nazism, Bavarian traditions, cinema, and design, offering a broad cultural panorama that combines past and present.
The Münchner Stadtmuseum is currently closed for renovation, but its rich heritage continues to be showcased through temporary exhibitions in external venues and digital activities.
