The Musée Atger is the oldest museum in the city of Montpellier. It keeps a thousand drawings and about 5000 prints and engravings. It is located inside the historic building which also houses the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Montpellier. The museum was born from the will of the collector from Montpellier Xavier Atger, who lived at the beginning of the 19th century, a lover and collector of works of art. His choice to create the museum within the medical faculty was linked to a deeply humanist vision that Atger had of knowledge and medicine: his will was to allow students to open up to art and above all to the study of drawing, technique essential for their formation and above all a privileged tool for their spirit of observation. Inside the collection there are graphic works of the French school, with artists such as Fragonard and Philippe de Champaigne, Dutch and Nordic works, with an autographed front and back by Rubens, drawings by Van Dyck and a wonderful old man's head by Joardens. The Italian school includes 150 drawings by artists such as Carracci, Guercino, Donatello, and 26 drawings by Tiepolo.
