The Estense Gallery welcomes a new project by the contemporary artist Mustafa Sabbagh, who reacts to the stimuli of ancient art and its relationship with our present. In the rooms, three site-specific interventions can be encountered, conducted in close dialogue with the works of the Estense collection. They do not claim to be explained or to explain, but rather remind us to approach the artworks by opening our eyes to their multifaceted aesthetic values. The rigorous mediation of the philological approach that in museums associates the works with the authors' names, dates, technical and art historical notions, can and must coexist with the ability to exercise one's own judgment, the habit of observing and thinking. Sabbagh offers us his way, choosing here to protect the autonomy of ancient art from the simplification of consumption formulas that reduce everything to a brand, a logo, even in the field of cultural tourism. The first room is entirely dedicated to Available Space: epidermis in pixels. An accumulation of countless photos, crumpled, folded, and rearranged in a mosaic, depicting details of paintings exhibited in the museum, from Garofalo to Guercino, from Camillo Filippi to Ludovico Lana. Bare and decontextualized feet, to suggest a subtly erotic voyeurism towards an indistinct sexual genre. Next is the video-mapping projection Available Space: renaissance:mental. The protagonist is an important Baroque sculpture from the Estense collection, the Veiled Woman by an unknown author from the Roman late seventeenth century. Her dreaming face, with half-closed eyes and frozen in white marble, comes to life and speaks in the masculine forms of a contemporary young man.
