Palazzo Litta is a historic building, considered one of the examples of Milanese Baroque architecture. The building was commissioned by Bartolomeo III Arese at the beginning of the 17th century. According to historical sources, it is thought that the Palazzo was enlarged by Ricchino between 1642 and 1646. After the death of Bartolomeo Arese and without male heirs, the palace passed into the hands of the Visconti and Borromeo families, the respective spouses of the two daughters . The last descendant of this family also died without male children, therefore the palace belonged to the Pompeo and Litta families, as well as spouses of the two daughters. With the Litta family there were various enlargements of the Palace starting from 1752. In particular, the facade was rebuilt in Rococo style, completed in 1763. The interiors with the grand staircase and the noble floor are of great interest. One of the most beautiful rooms is the “hall of mirrors”, whose walls are completely covered with mirrors. Today the Palace is the seat of the Regional Directorate of Museums of Lombardy and of the Superintendence of archeology, fine arts and landscape for the metropolitan city of Milan.
