From 16 October to 14 January 2023
The Capuchin Museum welcomes Lorenzo Berrettini from Cortona in preparation for the eighth centenary of the approval of the Rule of St. Francis of Assisi (1223) and the eight hundred years of the Clarian presence in Milan.
The Museum is present with various initiatives, starting with the exceptional exhibition of the lunette by Lorenzo Berrettini (1620-1672) "Madonna and Child between Saints Clare and Francis", which testifies to the common root of the charisms of St. Francis and St. Clare . Coming from the monastery of the Poor Clares of Cortona, it represents a very significant loan for the theme represented and for its provenance: the canvas, restored for the occasion, leaves Cortona for the first time in Lombardy (its only exhibition outside Cortona was in Rome in 1956).
Around the main work are exhibited paintings from the permanent collection of the Capuchin Cultural Heritage of Lombardy, not far from the time of production, which express the theme with different sensibilities. The Tuscan art of the seventeenth century which saw an extraordinary vitality in Berrettini's workshop in Cortona meets, therefore, with a more measured reading typical of the Lombardy of the Counter-Reformation.
From this moment and for a whole year, the digital copy of the bubble of approval of the Rule is also exhibited by kind offer of the Sacred Convent of Assisi which houses the original.
In the spring of 2023, another exhibition will make the ancient parchments that attest to the first presence of the Poor Clares in Milan visible to the public.
