The show

The Museo del Novecento and Palazzo Morando | Costume Moda Immagine in Milan in collaboration with Liberty and the Electa publishing house present, starting from 5 April 2023, the exhibition FuturLiberty. The exhibition, with the scientific curatorship of Ester Coen and the artistic direction of Federico Forquet for the fabrics, delves into the events of the Futurist movement in an unprecedented link between painting and applied arts in the two locations of the Modern and Contemporary Art Museums Area of the Municipality of Milan. The works of the protagonists of the futurist movement, Giacomo Balla, Gino Severini, Umberto Boccioni, Carlo Carrà and Fortunato Depero dialogue with the vorticist paintings of contemporary English artists, such as Percy Wyndham Lewis and Christopher Nevinson, starting from the Vital English Art manifesto of 1914 signed by the " caffeine of Europe”, Filippo Tommaso Marinetti. These artists in turn represented the source of inspiration that guided Federico Forquet and the Liberty design team in the creation of two new collections.

The inspiring avant-gardes of Futurism and Vorticism express the break with the past through an acute gaze towards the future, influencing the culture that manifests itself in costume and in all forms of everyday life. Strength, energy, dynamism are elements that reflect the vitality of the shapes that have accompanied the creative impulse of Liberty's designers in different eras.

Art life, space time, identity remixed in an aesthetic of the future, in a vision that reshapes principles and traditions.

The project has over 200 works in 2 locations. At the Museo del Novecento the exhibition focuses on the interdisciplinarity of avant-garde movements. An unprecedented and fascinating journey in 8 sections, through Futurism and Vorticism with fundamental works from the collection of the Museo del Novecento, of which 15 important authors such as Boccioni, Balla, Severini and Carrà, together with other loans from prestigious Italian and international institutions among the such as MART in Rovereto, GAM in Turin, Banca d'Italia, Tate, British Council, Estorick Collection, Ben Uri Gallery and Museum, William Morris Gallery in London, Sainsbury Center in Norwich, compared with the designs of the Liberty collections. Furthermore, an in-depth analysis is dedicated to the Liberty architecture of Milan with the projection of images of the 'style' buildings of the city. A path that combines the architecture and decorations with the designs of the prestigious London archive, underlining the stylistic influence of the floral and geometric motifs in a close bond between the two cities.
