From 29 March to 3 July 2022
At the opening of the Milanese Art Week , from Tuesday 29 March to Sunday 3 July 2022 , the Galleria d'Arte Moderna di Milano presents the exhibition As Above, So Below , a personal exhibition of new works by the artist Elisa Sighicelli .
Curated by Paola Zatti , curator in charge of the Galleria d'Arte Moderna di Milano , the exhibition brings to the stage an unprecedented and surprising story dedicated to the deposits of the Milanese museum, which develops through a special installation, conceived by the artist herself along the five rooms of the Villa Real dedicated to temporary exhibitions.
The exhibition itinerary brings together a corpus of about 25 images including photographic prints on paper, a print on plaster and two sculptures from the sculpture depot of the GAM in Milan .
The deposits are places of great charm, normally not open to visitors, because they are dedicated to the conservation and study of the works for scientific needs. On the eve of the reorganization of the deposits, the Galleria d'Arte Moderna in Milan entrusts Elisa Sighicelli with the task of telling a hidden world that is close to disappearance, inhabited by about 800 sculptural objects : a population of gypsum, bronzes, marbles, waxes, mutilated bodies, languid female figures, epigraphs, commanders and funerary relics who, unbeknownst to the visitor to the museum, inhabit the basement waiting to find a more functional location on the upper floors.
The title of the exhibition is born from this combination: As Above, So Below which reflects the concept of mirroring between human behavior and that suggested by the sculptures, but also the recognition of the correspondence between a higher order and a different underground dimension. At the base of this work is the relationship between photography and object, between image and reality, between sculpture and humanity. In fact, the artist chooses to measure himself with the deposit by investigating the expressive potential of single or group works, revealing interesting formal relationships and silent dialogues in casual juxtapositions.
