The show

Winner of the VI edition of the Arnaldo Pomodoro Prize for Sculpture, Candice Lin (Concord, MA, 1979) presents the installation Personal Protective Demon, curated by Federico Giani, curator of the Arnaldo Pomodoro Foundation.

Awarded by the Prize Selection Committee – made up of Sebastiano Barassi, Anna Maria Montaldo, Pavel Pyś, Christian Rattemeyer, Lorenzo Respi and Andrea Viliani – the sculptor, thanks to the collaboration of the Modern and Contemporary Art Museums Area of the Municipality of Milan, which shares the aims of the Prize, presents a new installation specially conceived for the space of Ignazio Gardella's staircase, a monumental trait d'union between the first and second floors of the Galleria d'Arte Moderna, in dialogue with the artifacts of extra-European origin that accompany the visitor in the transition from the nineteenth-century to the twentieth-century collections.

The choice of place within the museum's visit itinerary is not accidental: in fact, in her work, the artist usually studies and draws inspiration from marginal or forgotten realities, reflecting on objects and materials rich in stories and socio-cultural connotations , which the observer finds poetically transfigured in his sculptures.

Personal Protective Demon (PPD) is a faux marble monolith – a tribute to the decorative techniques that characterize the interiors of the GAM – positioned, like a sort of totem or idol, guarding a connective and liminal space of the Galleria d'Arte Moderna. The sculpture, overlooking the elliptical staircase, is wrapped in an indigo-colored silky fabric which, thanks to the action of hidden fans, rises intermittently, revealing its hybrid and monstrous features, between human and animal.
