The Museo Cerralbo is a museum in Madrid which is located in the ancient residence of Enrique de Aguilera y Gamboa, sixteenth Marquis of Cerralbo and collector. During his life the Marquis put together a series of paintings and objects while also promoting many archaeological excavations. Upon his death, he left everything as an inheritance. The Spanish State took possession of the building on September 24, 1924. In 1934, the Fundación Museo Cerralbo was born but for the actual opening of the museum they will have to wait another ten years. The collection kept in the palace is vast, with more than 50,000 objects including paintings, sculptures, drawings, prints, ceramics, furniture, books and medals. As for the canvases, these are mainly from the Iberian school. such as the Immaculate Conception by Francisco de Zurbarán, the Stigmata of St. Francis, by El Greco, San Domenico en Soriano by Antonio de Pereda, a touching Pietà by Alonso Cano, the Conversion of Saul by Juan Antonio Frías y Escalante, Landscape by Portugalete by Luis Paret and the Martyrdom of Saint Sebastian by José Antolinez and not to be missed are the still lifes by Luis Eugenio Meléndez. In addition to Spanish painting, the Italian one is also noteworthy with works dating back to the 16th and 17th centuries. Here there are two portraits, one by Bronzino with Alessandro de 'Medici as the subject and the other by Tintoretto depicting the Portrait of Agostino Doria. Other Italian artists include Girolamo Muziano, Palma il Giovane, Giovan Battista Ruoppolo, Giuseppe Recco, Ludovico Carracci, Giulio Cesare Procaccini, Pietro Paolini and Sebastiano Ricci, Francesco Maffei.
