HMS Belfast is a light cruiser belonging to the British Royal Navy. She entered service in August 1939 shortly before the outbreak of World War II and after a period of lengthy repairs, she returned to action in late 1942. She participated in a number of missions around the world but in 1963, it seemed she had to be dismantled for the recovery of materials. The ship eventually escaped its cruel fate thanks to the commitment of a private body and later to the requests of Sir Morgan Morgan-Giles, former captain of the ship: the HMS Belfast was thus transformed into a museum ship and is moored in London, on the Thames, near Tower Bridge, since 21 October 1971.
HMS has been under the administration of the Imperial War Museums since 1978.
Historical war-themed exhibits are set up inside HMS Belfast and the visitor can explore all nine decks of the iconic warship, including the top of the Flag Bridge to depths below the Thames waterline in the bridges lower.
