Ermenegildo Bois. An uncommon ingenuity between Livorno and Calcutta – New temporary installation in the green lounge of the Fattori Museum for the entire month of October.
From Tuesday 10 October a new exhibition entitled Ermenegildo Bois will be open to visitors in the green lounge on the ground floor of the Fattori Museum. An uncommon ingenuity between Livorno and Calcutta . The exhibition itinerary will also be open during the days of Harborea – Overseas Plant and Garden Festival , which will be held in the park of Villa Mimbelli from 13 to 15 October .
“The said young man is gifted with uncommon talent: and, encouraged and helped in the expenses necessary for the art he has undertaken under such happy auspices, he will one day be able to be the pride of his country” thus wrote the important sculptor Augusto Rivalta of Labronian artist Ermenegildo Bois.
The sculptor and painter Bois was born in Livorno on 21 October 1863. In view of the 160th anniversary of his birth , the Giovanni Fattori Civic Museum has decided to temporarily exhibit the works of this significant artist, about whom however little and confusing information is preserved today. .
Bois initially trained under the guidance of Natale Betti from Livorno, and then distinguished himself for his talent at the Academy of Fine Arts in Florence. Despite his successes at a young age, in his more mature years he attempted to make a career in the academic world, but without success. He thus decided to move to Calcutta for a long period (1900-1919), assisted by the marahja Bahadur sir Joteenndra Mohun Tagore , obtaining many important commissions. In 1919, he returned to Livorno, where he participated in the Labronico Group and in city life, without however repeating the success achieved in India.
The small exhibition showcases a selection of works from the deposits of the Giovanni Fattori Civic Museum: a group of sculptures The Scream, Indian Divinity, and portraits of Adolfo Chayes and Luigi Sgrilli, some paintings and documentation.
