The show

The exhibition of the contemporary artist Enrico Bertelli, organized by the Municipality of Livorno in collaboration with the Itinera Cooperative, will be inaugurated on Saturday 18 February at 18.00 at the "G. Fattori" Civic Museum - Granaries of Villa Mimbelli.

A creative journey to discover the complex world of the artist Enrico Bertelli through his generous gift to the Livorno civic collections of a rich series of works with dates ranging from 1987 to 2018.

Fifteen works, some made up of several works which are the documentation of the various stages of the artistic journey. Each work is the exemplification of a period of work and of the materials that have been used, from the initial collages to the drawings on paper, from the resins to the whole phase of the adhesives and plastics.

Enrico Bertelli worked as an illustrator for newspapers and at a cartoon studio where he designed the sets. In that job he produced many scraps, color tests, wrong sketches that he put aside instead of throwing away. He began to use these scraps and compose them in small abstract collages and he realized that those small collages moved him much more. He felt an identity, an impressive resemblance to those pieces of paper and began to reason why he was so attracted to things that came from a mistake. Looking at one of his paintings, one perceives the attempt to enhance the neglected, unseen, marginal, wrong things. His creative path is the story of an unresolved relationship between himself and mistakes. Thus he entrusts his work with the task of sharing his point of view with others.

For the occasion, the exhibition catalog published by the Municipality of Livorno will be available to visitors with the invaluable collaboration of Prof. Antonella Capitanio who edited the critical texts.

Bertelli's art is discreet. A research that doesn't give in to the sensational marketing of which, first and foremost, a large part of contemporary art is pervaded and constituted. It was born, as Bertelli himself says, from waste, from error, from that exception that reveals aspects of reality destined for marginality. Bertelli cares about what is destined to escape us. Possible landscapes, which however are not yet or no longer exist. Or that they will never even be. An art of few gestures for which few words are needed: rather the eyes are needed and, around, a little silence”.
