"The Collection" was born in 2005 and is the fusion between the "Usher Gallery", founded in 1927 and the "City and County Museum", founded in 1906. Both the gallery and the museum can therefore be visited. The Usher Gallery, the only public gallery in Lincolnshire, was originally built by architect Sir Reginald Blomfield to house the James Ward Usher collection, using the funds he bequeathed for the purpose. It was designed and was officially inaugurated on 25 May 1927 by the Prince of Wales. The exhibitions at the Usher Gallery are dedicated to the decorative and visual arts, including works by JMW Turner, John Piper, LS Lowry and Peter De Wint. The Usher Gallery also boasts a rich program of modern and contemporary art, in fact it has showcased artists such as Andy Warhol, Pablo Picasso, Salvador Dalí and Henri Matisse from the touring show Modern Masters went on display at the Museum. The Collection Musuem houses the archeology collection, once organized as a timeline from the Stone Age, through the Roman, Anglo-Saxon occupation and the Viking occupation up to the Middle Ages. Inside the museum, much of the Iron Age material comes from the Fiskerton excavations. Also included in the museum are satellite photographs of the county of Lincolnshire on a scale that allows you to search for fields and villages while the extension of the image reveals a general pattern of geology and the influence of Roman roads.
