The Inverness Museum and Art Gallery tells the story of the Highlands and its people. In the upstairs galleries the story of the Stuarts and Bonnie Prince Charlie is told, the music. In addition, the stunning Inverness silver collection is exhibited here. The Castle Wynd / Bridge Street area where the museum is located was freed to house the museum in 1963. Two major redevelopments were then implemented to expand the museum's spaces. The museum is full of different objects and allows the visitor a fun and interactive visit. For example, you can feel the weight of Achavrail's bronze bracelet, play Merells or Hnefetafl, learn to pronounce some Gaelic words and phrases, or wrap yourself in a Highland kilt. This museum also houses the Photographic Archive of the Highlands, a precious testimony and collection of negatives and photographs from all over the territory. The archive houses over 100,000 negatives and prints that refer to most areas of the highlands, but most come from Inverness and the surrounding area. The art gallery offers a program of temporary traveling exhibitions of local, national and international art and crafts.
