The Altonaer Museum is a Hamburg museum relating to the history, culture and art of northern Germany. The territories taken into consideration are in particular those around the Elbe River (including today's Altona district), those of the Nordic region of Schleswig Holstein (the northernmost in Germany, historically and culturally linked to Denmark), and the coastal areas the North Sea and the Baltic Sea. The large collection of the museum preserves paintings, graphic works, fabrics, toys and everyday objects of this territory, in particular coming from the sectors of craftsmanship, navigation and daily life in the countryside and in the cities. The foundation of the museum dates back to 1863 by the parish priest of Altona and other citizens who wanted to equip the area with a folk museum. Today, regular temporary exhibitions are organized in the museum, as well as a rich program of films and lectures on themes from the 19th and 20th centuries. Additionally, the presence of an interactive children's section makes the Altonaer Museum a popular destination for families.
