The Groninger Museum is a museum of art, history and archeology of the Dutch city of the same name.
Founded in 1874, the Groninger Museum until 1994 was housed in the neo-Gothic building of the Praediniussingel .
After a large donation in 1987, the organization had the opportunity to have a new building built. The current Groninger Museum building was opened in 1994 by Queen Beatrix.
The new seat of the museum, with its extremely modern architecture, was built by Alessandro Mendini, Michele de Lucchi, Philippe Starck and Coop Himmelb.
The Groninger Museum houses, among other things, a collection of Chinese and Japanese porcelain, ancient and avant-garde works of art . The latter include those of the local De Ploeg group.
