A temporary exhibition that focuses on the Japanese woman, beyond the stereotypes of the geisha, telling the true and multiple roles of female figures through the works of the Chiossone Collection.
Women as Muses, inspirations for art and icons of beauty, of which refined portraits from the 17th and 18th centuries will be exhibited: courtesans and geishas who set trends and influenced city life and the art world. Women as Heroines, female figures who excelled, in a country dominated by men, in their arts. Foremost among them is the extraordinary Katsushika Oi, daughter of the most famous Japanese artist, Hokusai, and his brilliant student. In addition to Oi's story, the tales of writers, poets, and even warriors who stood out for their talent will be narrated, still today a source of inspiration for future generations. Common women, workers depicted in their professions or mothers caring for their children, found in ukiyo-e prints and paintings, are also muses and heroines. They offer a glimpse into daily life and female customs of the time. The protagonists are presented in the exhibition through the display of paintings (kakemono) and woodblock prints, created by the greatest ukiyo-e artists such as Utamaro, Hokusai, and members of the Utagawa school. The exhibition is complemented by precious lacquerware for female cosmetics and elegant ornaments.
