Superbarocco project. The shape of wonder. Masterpieces in Genoa between 1600 and 1750 , at Palazzo Ducale, Appartamento del Doge, from 27 March to 10 July 2022. 2022 will be the year in which Genoa will celebrate one of the greatest periods of its history, when between the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries the Repubblica reached the apex of its power and experienced a moment of singular vivacity not only economic and financial, but also cultural and artistic.
Palazzo Ducale in Genoa hosts the Progetto SuperBarocco exhibition from 27 March to 10 July. The shape of wonder. Masterpieces in Genoa between 1600 and 1750 Organized in harmony with the exhibition at the Scuderie del Quirinale in Rome and curated by Pietro Boccardo, Jonathan Bober and Franco Boggero, the exhibition celebrates an extraordinary season when they were created by famous foreign artists such as Rubens, Van Dyck , Puget and brilliant local talents such as Bernardo Strozzi, Valerio Castello, Gregorio De Ferrari, works of surprising quality. An exhaustive sampling and a rigorous selection of one or two particularly emblematic works for each individual artist, effective in following step by step the stages of a journey that, starting from the key role played at the beginning of the seventeenth century by Giovan Battista Paggi, ends at mid-eighteenth century with the visionary experience of Alessandro Magnasco.
Being able to count on the large exhibition spaces offered by the Doge's Palace, the choice of works aimed at favoring large-format paintings - some altarpieces, but above all large "room pictures" of sacred or profane subjects - in some cases unpublished, and in several cases never presented in Genoa. The preponderant sequence of paintings on canvas is flanked by a small but extraordinary series of sculptures - both in marble and in wood - by the most established masters, so that the strong synergy that, especially after the mid-seventeenth century, involves painting in the Genoese ateliers can be exemplified. and sculpture. A series of Genoese initiatives is dedicated to some painters and sculptors which, united under the title The Protagonists. Masterpieces in Genoa 1600 - 1750 and set up at the same time as the Palazzo Ducale exhibition in various museums and city residences, focus the attention on individual artistic personalities with a monographic approach.
