The Ducal Palace of Genoa presents, in the rooms of the Doge's Apartment, the major monographic exhibition Painting the Invisible which pays tribute to the work of a protagonist of contemporary art, the painter Giorgio Griffa (Turin, 1936). The exhibition, curated by Ilaria Bonacossa and Sébastien Delot, is realized in collaboration with the Giorgio Griffa Foundation, and is open to the public from Saturday, March 22 to Sunday, July 13, 2025. Giorgio Griffa has been represented in three Venice Art Biennials (in 1978, 1980, and 2017) and has been the protagonist of over 200 solo exhibitions in museums and institutions around the world, including those organized by art historian Ida Giannelli in the 1970s-1980s at the SamanGallery in Genoa. With over 50 years of painting, he is an artist who has written the history of Italian art through a poetic, abstract, and performative painting, where gesture and sign transport the audience into a suspended experience outside of time where art history meets Zen spirituality. Ilaria Bonacossa, director of the Ducal Palace and co-curator of the exhibition, says: Giorgio Griffa's work has the silent strength of water in its transformative capacity that stages a poetic and hypnotic temporal suspension. The exhibition presents 50 works, including large canvases, works on paper, and installations, including a tribute to Eugenio Montale in the year celebrating the 100th anniversary of the poetic collection "Ossi di seppia" (Cuttlefish Bones). The exhibition proposes an open dialogue between Giorgio Griffa's large abstract canvases and the history and architecture of the palace.
