"The shape of the wind - gliding and the art of kites in the Japanese tradition" is the title of the exhibition, from 30 September 2023 to 28 January 2024, set up at the Castello d'Albertis - Museum of World Cultures, and at Edoardo Chiossone Museum of Oriental Art. From the language of symbols to the ritual dimension, from the peasant tradition to the world of art and artists, from the forms of traditional culture to technical and aesthetic evolutions, a fascinating journey to discover the thousand-year history of the tradition of gliding and Japanese art of kites.
Kites for sowing rites and for deep-sea fishing, land and sea kites, used in battle and on ceremonial occasions in village communities, built and painted to enliven the air and urban spaces, to accompany singing and dance, for aesthetic appreciation and for the play of adults and children, decorated with symbols and images that come from the culture of traditional arts, from the art of calligraphy to the theatre, from painting to the art of polychrome prints.
History and civilization, art and culture, forms and aesthetics, symbols and iconography, construction techniques and decorative styles, typologies and functions presented in a fascinating exhibition itinerary of works, images and installations, accompanied by scientific and iconographic materials created for the occasion.
With a special section dedicated to Ukiyo-e prints of the classical Japanese tradition.
