Portikus is an exhibition space in Frankfurt dedicated to contemporary art. Founded in 1987 by Kaspar Koenig, one of the largest and most influential curators of contemporary art, Portikus was born as a place for exhibiting temporary exhibitions, as well as a promoter space for emerging artists. The name Portikus derives from the remains of the portico of the Stadtbibliotek, a public library built in 1825 in a neoclassic style, destroyed in the Second World War: the first seat of the Portikus stood right on the remains of the library and was configured inside as a white cube, that is, a neutral exhibition space, in stark contrast to the neoclassical remains of the exterior. Since 2006 the museum has been moved to a new location on an island in the River Main. The current structure features an installation of lights inside the covered veranda on the roof of the building. Access to the museum is only possible via the "Alte Bruecke", the oldest bridge in the city. The Portikus is linked to the Staedelschule, the Frankfurt academy of the arts: this link allows a strong and fruitful exchange between the artists who exhibit in the space and the students of the art academy.
