The exhibition illustrates the contribution of Amerigo Vespucci and Giovanni da Verrazzano to the discovery of the American continent and its naming. Indeed, it was the names of the two Florentine navigators that characterized the 'birth certificates' of the New World: Vespucci in 1507 inspired the name America for the South American continent, while Verrazzano - who explored the North American coast and the bay of New York in 1524 - attributed his family name to the lands between Florida and Newfoundland. Unlike America, a denomination that over time was extended to the entire continent, Verrazzana survived on maps for only a few decades.
