On the occasion of the purchase by the Ministry of Culture of the painting depicting the Holy Family by Girolamo da Carpi, the National Gallery of Ferrara hosts an exhibition of five paintings from April 5 to September 25, 2022, curated by Alessandra Pattanaro and Marcello Toffanello, summarizing the activity of the Ferrarese artist during the 1530s: from small devotional paintings to altarpieces, from fresco decoration to portraits. The new important acquisition of the Holy Family, executed after his first trips to Rome and perhaps still during his stay in Bologna, allows the National Gallery of Ferrara to exhibit a work fully representative of Girolamo da Carpi's activity. This is indeed a crucial period for the Ferrarese artist, who, thanks to the inspirations received in the two major cities of the Papal State, reaches expressive maturity. The exhibition includes four other paintings executed in this same period (around 1530-1537), at the end of which Girolamo is called back to Ferrara by the new Duke Ercole II d'Este (1534-1559). It is therefore a double return home: of the artist in the past and of one of his works today, among the many that have left the city and Italy over the centuries.
