The show

On the occasion of the purchase by the Ministry of Culture of the painting depicting the Holy Family by Girolamo da Carpi, the Pinacoteca Nazionale di Ferrara hosts an exhibition of five paintings from 5 April to 25 September 2022, curated by Alessandra Pattanaro and Marcello Toffanello. which summarize the activity of the Ferrara artist during the thirties of the sixteenth century: from small-format devotional painting to the altarpiece, from fresco decoration to portrait.

The new, very important acquisition of the Holy Family, carried out after his first trips to Rome and perhaps still during his stay in Bologna, allows the Pinacoteca Nazionale in Ferrara to exhibit a work that is fully representative of the activity of Girolamo da Carpi. It is in fact a crucial period for the artist from Ferrara, who, thanks to the suggestions received in the two major cities of the Papal State, reaches expressive maturity. The exhibition brings together four other paintings made in this same period (1530-1537 ca.), at the end of which Girolamo is recalled to Ferrara by the new Duke Ercole II d’Este (1534-1559). It is therefore a double "return to homeland": of the artist in the past and one of his works today, among the many who have left the city and Italy over the centuries.
