The event

The ArenaMEIS is back, the open-air cinema housed in the garden of the National Museum of Italian Judaism and the Shoah of Ferrara (via Piangipane, 81) and dedicated to films that explore the themes of Judaism, identity and the value of diversity.

The third edition of the arena, which in recent years has been very successful and sold out, is entitled “… It's a classic!”: A tribute to the history of cinema between past and present that will also hold many surprises. The seven events will be introduced by presentations, concerts, special guests, previews and much more.

It begins on Wednesday 6 July with “Miss Marx”, a gripping film dedicated to Eleanor, the daughter of Karl Marx, an activist for the rights of women and children, and her unfortunate love. The film, which met with great success with audiences and critics, won three David di Donatello's and was in competition at the 77th Venice International Film Festival. An exceptional guest presented him at MEIS: the director and screenwriter Susanna Nicchiarelli.

The collaboration with the Pitigliani Kolno'a Festival continues, which for 15 years has brought the best Israeli cinema titles to Italy: on 13 July at the ArenaMEIS, “Footnote”, winner in 2011 in Cannes for the best screenplay, will be screened. At the center of the scene is the tormented relationship between a father and a son, both eminent scholars of the Talmud, and a prestigious award that sows discord. The film will be in the original language with subtitles.

On July 20 there will be a laugh with the hilarious comedy “Harry, meet Sally…”: a story of love and friendship set against the backdrop of a vibrant New York in the late 1980s. To precede the film, a classic for an evening of lightness, the musical introduction by the Musicians Association of Ferrara dedicated to "The jazz of the Big Apple".

"…It's a classic!" it cannot fail to pay homage to the talent of Barbra Streisand who this year blew out 80 candles. One of his greatest hits is scheduled for July 27: “As We Were”, the story of the troubled love between the idealist Jewish girl Katie and the aspiring writer Hubbel (Robert Redford). To introduce the evening, the students of the Florestano Vancini School of Cinematographic Art.

On 10 August a special event for young and old: ArenaKIDS. The cartoon “Fievel lands in America” will be screened, the adventurous story of a little mouse on the run with his family to conquer a stars and stripes dream. For the occasion, admission will be free.

Dustin Hoffman lying by the pool is one of the images that have forever marked the history of cinema. On August 24th arrives “The Graduate”, the film by Mike Nichols dedicated to the overwhelming relationship between the young recent graduate Benjamin Braddock and the charming Mrs Robinson. The film will be preceded by a live concert dedicated to the unforgettable soundtrack signed by Simon & Garfunkel reinterpreted by the Musicians Association of Ferrara.

"…It's a classic!" ends with a preview: on 31 August the director Karen Di Porto, who has already signed the critically-loved film “Maria per Roma”, presents the unpublished documentary “Piazza” to the public. Produced by Nanni Moretti, “Piazza” is a very original, bittersweet portrait of the Jews of Rome: from the ghetto and persecutions to rebirth and small and big revenge.

ArenaMEIS has the patronage of the Emilia-Romagna Region, the Municipality of Ferrara and the Florestano Vancini School of Cinematographic Art; it is made in collaboration with ARCI Ferrara APS, the Ferrara Musicians' Association, the Pitigliani Kolno'a Festival and with the contribution of the Le Pagine Cooperative.
