The Dover Museum, in the town of the same name, is one of the oldest museums in Kent. Founded in 1836, it is currently one of the county's top tourist attractions. The Dover museum tells the fascinating story of the development of the city and its famous port, using original objects, graphics and models. The museum's highlight is the recently added Dover Bronze Age Boat Gallery. The history of the excavation and conservation of the Dover Boat is presented here. The Bronze Age boat, the central piece of the gallery, was discovered in Dover and is of international importance: it is the oldest known maritime boat in the world. The gallery also explores the main themes of the Bronze Age through artifacts, replicas, models, videos, exhibits and illustrated panels. On the ground floor, Dover's history from the Stone Age to the Saxons is traced. Some of the exhibits on display come from the collections of the British Museum. The first floor is dedicated to a special exhibition that changes every year. The top floor gallery is the largest. Six scale models clearly show the city and port of Dover growing since medieval times.
