The Herbert Art Gallery & Museum is a museum, gallery and cultural center in the city of Coventry, England. It is named after Sir Alfred Herbert, a local industrialist who founded Alfred Herbert Limited, once considered the largest machine tool company. In 1938, Sir Alfred donated £ 100,000 to the city of Coventry to pay for the construction of an art gallery and museum. The Herbert Art Gallery & Museum presents heterogeneous collections. These permanents are composed of visual arts (paintings, sculptures, watercolors, drawings), archeology, local history and natural history. Among the masterpieces preserved here are the masters of the sixteenth and twentieth centuries, including: Triumph of Bacchus and Ariadne by Luca Giordano (1675-77); King George III by Sir Thomas Lawrence (1792); The Porter and the Hare by Johann Zoffany (c. 1768); Selling Fish by George Morland (c. 1799). One section is dedicated to Lady Godiva (Discover Godiva) and the most famous canvases are: Godiva by Adam van Noort (1586), Lady Godiva by Marshall Claxton (1850) The Lady Godiva Procession of 1829, Coventry by David Gee (1861) Lady Godiva's Prayer by Edwin Landseer (1865) Godiva by John Collier (c. 1898). The Historic Gallery is dedicated to the history of Coventry from 1450 to the present. The collection of the archaeological section contains artifacts ranging from the Bronze Age to the Tudor period. The natural history collection consists of approximately 180,000 artifacts: rocks and minerals, stuffed animals, animal skeletons, sea shells, butterflies and moths. The social and industrial history collections recount various aspects of life in Coventry, such as silk processing from the early 1700s to 1860. Finally, the historical archive consists of ancient manuscripts (the oldest dates back to 1182 [20]). The museum also hosts temporary exhibitions.
