The Station marine de Concarneau is a museum and study center located in Concarneau, Brittany. It is part of the French National History Museum. It is the oldest marine station in the world still in operation. Originally dedicated to the breeding of marine animals, it has quickly become a very active Scietid center. The "Marinarium" is the space open to the public that shows marine species in an aquarium. Among the marine animals of greatest interest we find the purple hedgehog, the "glacial" starfish, the snub-nosed horse, and the Spirograph. The origin of the collection of marine species dates back to 1870, shortly after the creation of the station. There is also a historic algae herbarium created at the end of the nineteenth century by the Hippolite brothers Marie Crouan and Pierre Louis Crouan, both pharmacists. Today, in a context of global changes, the station is active in the study for the management and conservation of biodiversity and ecosystems. The message of the museum, open to the public, is to "know, understand, manage the sea and respect it better".
