The Wallraf Richartz Museum is an important art gallery in Cologne. Opened in 1861, the museum is located in the historic center of the city. The museum houses a large collection of works from various European schools, from the Middle Ages to the beginning of the twentieth century. The core of the collection arises from the donation that Franz Ferdinand Wallraf (1759 - 1824), collector and art lover, made to the city of Cologne.
The museum exhibits a collection ranging from the Middle Ages to the early twentieth century. Among the works of the Gothic period, the Madonna del Roseto by Stefan Lochner, dated to 1450, stands out. The sixteenth and seventeenth centuries are represented by paintings by Rubens, Rembrandt, Mattia Preti and Murillo. The Impressionist collection includes works by Manet, Monet, Renoir, Pissarro, van Gogh, Cézanne, Gauguin, Bonnard; the twentieth century is represented by Ensor and Munch. A section is dedicated to drawings, with works by Leonardo da Vinci, Dürer, Rubens, Liebermann, Rodin.
