The Schnütgen Museum is a Cologne museum dedicated to medieval art. It is housed in the Romanesque Basilica of Santa Cecilia, one of the oldest churches in the city and houses a precious collection of medieval works of art, including wood and stone sculptures, goldsmith works, glass painting, rare ivories and fabrics. Most of the finds come from the period between the 11th and 16th centuries, from the territory of the Rhineland, but there are also works from Byzantine and other European cities, as well as some works from the Baroque era.
The museum's collection is considered to be among the most beautiful and rich in medieval Europe, rivaling the Cloisters of New York or the Musée national du Moyen Age in Paris. The exhibition venue of the museum is an experience in itself: the silence and aura of the Basilica and the particular proximity to the objects invite you to experience the works of art in their spirituality and beauty. It is also possible to visit the gardens of the basilica: surrounded by hedges, they offer a place of rest and contemplation.
