The Museum Ludwig is a Cologne museum dedicated to modern and contemporary art. Founded in 1976 by the collector Peter Ludwig, it is located near the Cathedral and the Central Station. The collection includes important works of Pop-Art, Abstractionism and Surrealism. Among the artists on display are important works by Andy Warhol, Roy Lichtenstein, Nam June Paik, Joseph Beuys, Wolf Vostell and Edward Kienholz.
The Ludwig Museum also has one of the largest Picasso collections in Europe (around 900 works). It includes a large collection of works of German Expressionism, with works by artists such as Erich Heckel, Karl Schmidt-Rottluff, Ernst Ludwig Kirchner, August Macke, Otto Mueller. The museum also preserves the largest collection of Russian avant-garde works outside Russia itself, with numerous works by exponents such as Kasimir Malevich, Ljubov Popova, Natalia Goncharova, Mikhail Larionov, and Alexander Rodchenko. There are also present or pears of other important exponents of the early twentieth century, such as Chagall and Otto Dix. The museum also organizes several temporary exhibitions.
