The Ludwig Museum Coblenz is a museum in Koblenz with an important collection of contemporary art. Inaugurated in 1992, this is the fifth art collection started by the spouses Ludwig, Peter and Irene, who with their donation constituted the fundamental nucleus of the current museum collection.
The collection includes works of French, German and American art from the second half of the 20th century. In addition to Pablo Picasso, Max Ernst and Man Ray, there are works by Jasper Johns, Willem de Kooning, Robert Rauschenberg, Christian Boltanski, Daniel Buren, Jean Dubuffet, Martial Raysse, Niki de Saint Phalle, Jean Tinguely, François Morellet, Patrick Raynaud o Bernar Venet in the portfolio. Today, the collection has over 300 works, and is constantly expanding thanks to acquisitions and donations. The groups "Nouveaux Réalistes", "Fluxus", "Concept Art" and "Support / Surface" are among the most appreciated in the permanent collection, together with representatives of American Pop Art. Furthermore, the museum's focus on 20th-century French art, particularly developments after 1945 to current locations, is unique in Germany. The museum has a fruitful dialogue that broadens this relationship, working closely with numerous French institutions and museums. The museum regularly organizes numerous temporary exhibitions. In the garden around the museum space there are works by contemporary artists, such as "The Thumb" by César.
