The Städtisches Museum is a museum in Braunschweig dedicated to the history of the city. Founded in 1861, it is one of the largest museums of cultural and artistic history in Germany, with a collection of over 270,000 objects on the history of Braunschweig.
The museum keeps a rich collection divided into different sections, which testifies to every sector of the cultural and artistic life of Braunschweig over the centuries. The folklore section contains rural costumes, jewelery and everyday objects from the Braunschweig area. In the Pinacoteca, the Gemäldegalerie, works from the 18th to the 20th century are exhibited. These are in particular works by Brunswick painters such as Pascha Johann Friedrich Weitsch and her son Friedrich Georg Weitsch. The applied arts sector includes examples of fine art furniture, silverware, Fürstenberg porcelain and Brunswick earthenware. The rich graphics section contains around 50,000 works, including 10,000 drawings by Braunschweig artists and city views. The Numismatic Collection includes 70,000 coins and medals and 16,000 banknotes: it is one of the largest numismatic collections in Northern Germany. The technical collection presents the cameras of the Brunswick manufacturers Rollei and Voigtländer, as well as medical instruments, weapons, watches and calculating machines.
A permanent exhibition also shows the stages of development of the city: starting from the status of a Hanseatic town, to its transformation into a royal seat, finally becoming an industrial city.
