Paula Modersohn-Becker Museum

The Paula Modersohn-Becker Museum is a Bremen museum dedicated to the expressionist artist Paula Modersohn-Becker. It is the first museum in the world dedicated to a painter. The museum was inaugurated on June 2, 1927 and presents the key works of the artist's artistic path, as well as the largest collection of art objects of Bernhard Hoetger, sculptor and architect. The building of expressionist architecture in which the museum is located was commissioned by the merchant and patron Ludwig Roselius and designed and built by Bernhard Hoetger himself. The collection includes works covering the painter's entire career, from the first images of her formative years in Berlin to paintings made in Paris in 1906-07. The paintings and drawings on display attest to Paula Modersohn-Becker's exceptional status as a pioneer of modern painting in the early 20th century. The museum also organizes numerous temporary exhibitions often dedicated to contemporary artists, in which we connect to the history of the museum and of the collections, creating a dialogue with the present.
