From 17 March to 3 September 2023
At Museion Passage – a space dedicated to the enhancement of the museum collection and the link with the territory, accessible free of charge – the work of the visual artist Dan Graham Sonic Youth Pavilion will be inaugurated, destined to host collateral projects on the analysis of video as an artistic tool.
The installation, at the same time a sculpture, an architectural element and an exhibition, was conceived and created by the artist in 2008 specifically for Museion, as an integral part of the exhibition "SONIC YOUTH etc.: SENSATIONAL FIX". The space and work conceived by Graham and now positioned on the Museion ground floor takes the form of a pavilion of semi-reflecting glass and mirrors, with perforated steel walls where it is possible to enter, an environment permeable to the gaze of both those outside and of who is inside.
The pavilion belonging to the museum collection is a unique example, conceived by the artist not only as an architectural environment, but also as a display for multimedia contents, where some video stations are in fact welcomed with which the visitor can interact.
During the exhibition, the work encompasses two distinct moments in the programming of Passage, to analyze the medium of video as an all-round instrument of artistic investigation.
The first moment (17.03 – 04.06) entitled My Bolzano. Views on the city is dedicated to the collaboration between Museion and ZeLIG – School of Documentary, Television and New Media of Bolzano. Inside the pavilion, four video stations host the first documentary exercises of first-year male and female students, focused on the city and its inhabitants, for the development of a personal authorial language. The pavilion thus becomes a sort of window on the activity of the institute and on the first processes of vision and narration through video.
My Bolzano, the title of these productions, tells of an intimate and still young relationship with the city and the medium of the camera. Occupying the space within Dan Graham's pavilion, these different views establish a symbolic dialogue with the urban spaces perceivable through the transparency of the pavilion and the architecture of the museum itself.
The second moment entitled Time Frame (09.06 – 03.09), curated by author and curator Saim Demircan, offers specific programming dedicated to three male and female artists who have used film and video as a means of documenting exhibitions. Whether developing specific shooting techniques or working with footage, these structural, collaborative and subjective approaches sit somewhere between artwork and document.
