The show

Museion presents, as part of an international project in collaboration with CentroCentro, Madrid, and CAC, Bretigny, the first solo exhibition in a museum in Italy by the artist Mercedes Azpilicueta (La Plata, Argentina, 1981).

In a world that requires order, efficiency and transparency, the Mercedes Azpilicueta project moves on the thread of chaos and excess. Bestiario de Lengüitas (Bestiario delle linguette) starts from a screenplay written by the artist for a future performance that may or may not happen. Drawings, costumes, sculptures, audio and video installations, wallpaper and a chorus of grotesque characters inhabit the exhibition space, which presents itself as a stage - even the public is involved with all senses in this experience. Through the combination of visual and theatrical strategies and a strong humorous component, the artist thus invites us to question the ways in which we live in this world.

The use of the body; wandering through areas of knowledge - from art history to popular music, from literature to street culture; the preference for figures considered dissidents - feminists, queers, migrants, exiled individuals - are central elements of the work of Mercedes Azpilicueta. Moving between different references and levels of reading, generations and geographies, his practice then translates into performances, videos, texts and, recently, into sculpture up to exploring the potential of the theatrical space.

The artist has already been present at Museion in the Somatechnics exhibition (2018) with the performance ye-gua-ye-ta-yu-ta. On that occasion he had recited, in the Castilian dialect of Rioplatense more than 400 insults directed to Argentine women, bringing out a further, important element of his work, namely the reflection on the inequalities of language and its potential for aggression based on gender.
