From 15 February to 14 May 2020
Museion presents, as part of an international project in collaboration with CentroCentro, Madrid, and CAC, Bretigny, the first solo exhibition in a museum in Italy by the artist Mercedes Azpilicueta (La Plata, Argentina, 1981 ) .
In a world that requires order, efficiency and transparency, the Mercedes Azpilicueta project moves on the edge of chaos and excess. Bestiario de Lengüitas (Bestiary of Tongues) builds on a script written by the artist for a future performance that may or may not happen. Drawings, costumes, sculptures, audio and video installations, wallpaper and a chorus of grotesque characters inhabit the exhibition space, which looks like a stage - even the public is involved with all senses in this experience. Through the combination of visual and theatrical strategies and a strong humorous component, the artist thus invites us to question the ways in which we inhabit this world.
The use of the body; ranging across areas of knowledge - from art history to popular music, from literature to street culture; the predilection for figures considered dissidents - feminists, queers, migrants, exiled individuals - are central elements of Mercedes Azpilicueta's work. Moving between different references and levels of reading, generations and geographies, his practice therefore translates into performances, videos, texts and, recently, into sculpture to explore the potential of the theatrical space.
